"Fall" Collection

Posted by Sathyamurthy www.sathyamurthy.com on October 7, 2008

I got this mail from one friend:

I am sad to share with you untimely demise of our beloved dynamic duo SENSEX and NIFTY

They were unwell since last few months due to constant fluctuation of Oil and $ count. Though recently it stabilised and was improving but last weekend they got sudden blow from bankruptcy virus called LEHMYAIG. It's a deadly combination of Lehman, Merill Lynch and AIG. The blow from this virus proved fatal. Coupled with epidemic effect of the above and Wa Mu, Wach and Goldman infection SENSEX and NIFTY just could not be saved.

May god give peace to soul of their beloved family members.

SENSEX & NIFTY – 1970 to 2008

Children: Reliance, Infosys, ICICI, Bhel, L& T and 40 others
Cousin: Hang Seng, KOSPI, NIKKEI
In laws: Dow Jones and NASDAQ

You are requested to pay tribute to them by looking at your portfolios for 5 minutes

I replied back to him this:

If only they heeded to advise of elders and "Exercised" caution regularly, they would have lived for some more years.  But they were "Banking" too much on "Power" and had little "Healthcare".  The body looked sound but the internal "Infrastructure" was very bad may be because of "Engineering" faults or "Cellular" problems.  Some even felt that "Biotechnology" could have saved them with the support of data gathered using "Information Technology" which in turn used "Computer Hardware".  They even tried to "Outsource" some of the life support systems and by "Auto"mating some organs but  nothing could strengthen and "Cement" the situation.  But despite the efforts every "OTHER" thing tried failed.

The "real estate" left behind them are staring at us in our portfolios as strong immovables.

We can only look to buy some "Capital Equipment" to build a nice monument for these departed souls and make a ever burning light with some "OIL" and pass "Gas" looking at the monument.

May their souls rest in peace.

Bull Market Vs Bear Market

Posted by Sathyamurthy www.sathyamurthy.com on June 5, 2008

We were talking about the rate of inflation, rising prices and the impending oil price increase in India.
Friend: Prices are increasing like mad. Inflation is worrying and all prices are rising.
Me: But, inflation is not affecting everything.
Friend: (Surprised) Not affecting everything? How?
Me: Look at your portfolio, and look at what happened to the price of shares that you bought last month, last week, yesterday, today! Without exception aren’t they lower?
Friend: Yah! Its a bear market (for stocks). Just thinking what they were talking around December 2007 and early Jan 2008. All were expecting the market to go up. There were buy calls everywhere.
Me: Yah! In a bull market every one is a bull and you get lots of bull shit. And in a bear market, you have to bear all those shit that you got from the bull market!

Sensex wild moves

Posted by Sathyamurthy www.sathyamurthy.com on January 26, 2008

The Indian stock markets in the recent times have become very volatile. 500 or 1000 points up or down on the barometer BSE Sensex has become the norm of the day. So here goes our conversation on the Sensex movement.

Friend: Did you see the Sensex. Some days back it climbed up new peaks and was around 21K. Then the wild swings on the global stock melt down. It just swings 1000 odd points in a single day.

Me: Yes. When the Sensex was at 5000 or 6000 levels such movements were not there. Now such swings have become the norm of the day.

Me: I begin to think now it is no more “sens”ex – it is more “ex-sense”.

Me: And its moves have made us feel we have kum (less) sense. Investors have (probably) learnt their lessons and that is the essence. We should curtail our “Yes” sense to the tipster “nuisance” then there can be excellence in our investments.
